I've got a hard drive from my old laptop that id like to install in my new laptop, any suggestions?

I've got a hard drive from my old laptop that id like to install in my new laptop. My new laptop has an extra internal slot to install a hard drive. The interfaces match up and the HDD from the old laptop fits fine but its not showing up in explorer or anything. Im running windows 7 x64 bit. If i try and make the hard drive master (the only hard drive in the laptop) it blue screens after the windows loading logo. (ive tried this with two hard drives that both have operating systems that worked fine on their original laptops). There are no options to enable a master or slave settings, Just to enable the detection of the hard drives. Any suggestions to get this old HDD to work as a slave for extra storage?
