Family Court question: My son's father never showed up to court today. Last month he didn't show up either?

The Family Court Judge said that my case for child support will go to trial and then she asked me if i would like the father to go to jail, or something to that effect. I said yes. Now I am confused as to whether he is going to jail first, and then he goes to court for the trial OR the other way around! I got a little "comprehension challenged" while the court magistrate was talking and need someone out there to tell me what to expect next! Can someone with court experience help me out here? thanks
