Why is it that lecturers (who also research) get paid less than highschool teachers?

You are comparing apples to oranges. You are comparing the lowest paid lecturers with the highest paid teachers who very often have advanced degrees and longevity. I had a doctorate while teaching in a high school while many lectures did not. There is also a a difference in living costs from one area of our country to another which affects salaries./
